that is it for "special report," fair, balanced and unafraid. charles, i had more time. >> shepard: this is the fox report. tonight, the feds say the deadly flu epidemic -- outbreak is now an epidemic. widespread in all but three states and killing children. but there may be some good news. and it's supposed to be among the most advanced passenger jets in all the world. but for the dream liner, it's really more nightmare. they have had electrical problems, a cracked windshield, even a fire. >> every new commercial airplane has issues in the inner service. >> shepard: now the feds are investigating. still, the dozens of dream liners already in service are going to keep flying. >> nothing we have seen would indicate that this airplane is not safe. >> shepard: but would you get on one? this little boy disappeared in

1994, kidnapped apparently by his own grandparents. police have found him alive and well. >> it's unbelievable that many years have gone by but happy he was found. >> shepard: tonight, how they tracked him down. and this little piggy tries to escape the cops. >> a couple guys had ropes and they tried to rope it but that didn't work out too well for us. >> it was a little too fast for him. >> tonight, police take on a pig in the streets of phoenix. but first from fox this friday night. the deadly flu outbreak is now officially an epidemic. that's the word from the feds today. the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta is now reporting the flu is widespread across 47 states. one school is using high powered screen clearance to

disinfect classrooms or staffers there that it cuts the cleaning time for one room from four hours to just 45 minutes. a district in oklahoma cancelled all classes today. officials say one quarter of all students there are out with the flu. the feds say that the epidemic has killed 20 children, at least across the country. they tell us they don't have a count of how many adults may have died. but the cdc estimates flu kills an average of 24,000 people a year. health experts say it's too soon to predict whether this year will be above average, but it certainly started way early. jonathan serrie is live in atlanta, home to the cdc. any word on an end to this? it sounds like it's getting better down south. >> well, you know, that's the strange thing. although flu is widespread in most states, there are early reports suggesting that flu activity may actually be decreasing in some parts of the country. including parts of the south. that could simply be because of lower reporting.

people usually put off doctor visits during the holidays except in extreme emergencies. cdc officials say they need a couple more weeks before they can say for sure whether flu activity is actually decreasing in these parts of the country. shep. >> shepard: vaccine supply plentiful, right? >> it is plentiful but so -- there is so much demand for the vaccine now that the cdc is receiving reports of spotty shortages. so, if the first place you check is out of vaccine don't be surprised but don't give up. listen. >> a lot of doctors that ordered vaccines or a lot of the clinics that ordered vaccines did so and gave it out in the fall. they may not have enough left or may not have the vaccine you want left. you may have to call around a bit. you may still be able to find vaccine still. >> public health officials keep telling us it's not too late to get vaccinated. we don't know how long this flu season will last.

shep? >> shepard: boeing executives now say new 787 dream liner is safe to fly. the feds are ordering a major review of that plane. after incidents including a fuel leak and a fire. 49 the of these jumbo jets, dream liners are currently in service around the world. united airlines is already flying about a half dozen of them and has ordered a total of 50. deem liner electrical fire boston logan airport. there was 40-gallon fuel spill there as well. a breaking problem all of those just this week today in japan reports of a cracked cockpit window and oil leak to boot. nobody has hurt in any of this. both government officials and boeing insists passengers are not at risk. >> i believe this plane is safe. i would have absolutely no reservation of boarding one of these planes and taking a flight. >> we have complete confidence in the 787 and so do our

customers. >> take a look at the cut away view of this dream liner's. it's boeing's most technically advanced by a long shot. materials replacing the aluminum. cheaper to fly, less fuel. supposed to be very fuel efficient. relying on electrical systems more than other planes. all of that technology is causing concern right now. dan springer is in seattle for us tonight where the teams assemble the 787. dan, explain exactly what this review is targeting if you would. >> they are calling it a sweeping review of the plane's electrical system. test fire back in 2010. problems followed by the lithium fired battery you mentioned this week. aviation analyst in seattle says these types of reviews are rare. officials did not say how long it would take. >> we're going to put an emphasis on the electrical systems of the airplane. what this includes is components such as batteries

and power distribution panels. we'll also look how the electrical and mechanical systems of the airplane interact with one another. >> and the dream liner in service now will be able to fly during the review, shep. >> shepard: i don't know about the stock. it's been down all week. the stock dropped again today 2.5%. the real concern is the long term reputation of boeing's first new plane in two decades. so far no customers that we can tell have cancelled an order. in fact, all napon airways. the first one to buy opened a new route from tokyo to san jose today. the company's chairman told reporters he had not spoken with the faa yet but he believed the dream liner was safe. boeing has sold more than 800 dream liners. they started delivery just over a year ago pause of delays and cost overrun some analysts think it will be several years before turn a profit that is base odd an quick revolution to these

>> shepard: president obama says he is speeding up the transition in afghanistan. made the announcement today. u.s. troops are now to shift to a support role this spring. months earlier than the pentagon originally predicted. the president made that announcement after meeting with his counterpart from afghanistan. harmid karzai at the white house. >> starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission. training, advising, assisting, afghan forces. it will be historic moment. >> most of the 66,000 combat troops in afghanistan are set to leave at the end of next year. the president says he has not yet decided whether to speed up that down draw or how many american force also stay around after 2014.

this week at the white house said it would consider leaving zero ground troops behind but that was largely seen as a negotiating employee with the afghans. the president is keeping the option on the table, probably for that reason. jennifer griffin at the pentagon. is he also promising the afghans a strategic partisanship, what's -- partnership. >> the strategic partnership how many troops can say post 2014. the real question is whether they be given immunity. that whole zero option zero troops to stay pass 2014 was designed to get karzai's attention. it was a negotiating ploy. essentially so that karzai would go back and would realize that he needs to get immunity for u.s. troops. none of which can stay without it it's a hard ball move so that the u.s. does not end up in afghanistan like it did in iraq without permission to stay. >> and nowhere do we have any kind of security agreement with a country without

immunity for our troops. as far as i understand. >> we understand that the issue of immunity is off -- of very specific importance to the united states. >> most at the pentagon think that president obama will settle on between 23 and 6,000 troops. most of them special operators involved in counter terrorism, shepard. >> shepard: there is another headline out of this too, jennifer, that's talks with the taliban. >> after 11 years of war, the afghan president announced today from the white house the taliban will be given a seat at the table. >> we agreed on allowing the taliban office in qatar. >> president obama issued a caveat. the taliban must renounce terrorism. the president diverted attention from those asking whether 11 years of war were worth it by announcing today army staff sergeant clinton romesha who helped repel one of the most vicious attacks in

"the fox report's" correspondent jonathan hunt is with us here. there is a lot more to this. investigators say the grandparents were apparently doing what they thought best because the parents were in a

really bad place. >> yeah, back in 1994, the mother and the stepfather were apparently unemployed. they were actually living in their car. the grandparents were very concerned about their grandson. they were actually involved in a legal battle for custody of the boy. and they vanished when they appeared to be on the point of losing that court fight. now, one of the cops who investigated the disappearance at the time seems to have some sympathy for the grandparents' actions. listen. >> i just knew that they were not the kind of people who were going to see that he got hurt at all. so, but it was wrong. it's just too bad that that many years have gone by. but i am really happy that he was found and everything is okay. >> now, of course, whatever the grandparents' motives and intentions what they did was illegal but there is no word yet on whether nearly 19 years later they are going be

charged. shep? >> shepard: shaping up to be a tough reunion. >> the mother is said to be jumping for joy. think of richard landers now living at michael landers. is he 24 years old. we don't know whether his grandparents told him his mother was deader alive. we don't know what he said about the situation in which he grew up. he also now has his own family to think about. he is married and has -- is expecting his first child. so one of the cops in indiana says a reunion may be a while yet. listen. >> as far as i know, there is no real plans in the works for any kind of a reunion at this point. but, again, it's still very early because this bombshell was just dropped on this young man here within the last couple of days. probably going to take time to digest and work those things out. >> now, we spoke to the mother's attorney today. he told us that she is trying to figure out a way to contact her son and clearly everybody here understands that there is a whole lot of emotions involved, shep. >> shepard: there must be, jonathan, thank you. an explosion leveled a home

today, hurt at least three people, including two firefighters. look at what's left of the house outside of dallas. investigators say they are still trying to figure out what went wrong here. the fire chief told the dallas morning news newspaper that crews had been repairing a gas line behind the home so they figure it's that. a local television station reports that the charity owned the duplex. which housed low income families. the hospital listed those two firefighters in fair condition. the third man though critical. rot in hell. that's what the father of one victim of the colorado movie theater massacre told the accused killer in open court today. now victims and families and prosecutors are protesting after the judge agreed to delay the case and for a long time. we're live at the courthouse. plus, what's up with the teacher and the weather, more specifically. finance looking more like winter in california and texas than in chicago. and wait until you hear about the record they just set in chicago. that's coming up as we approach the bottom of the hour and the top of the news

they are angry over a delay in this trial after the judge postponed today's plea hearing. postponed it it until march defense attorneys said they are not ready there is indeed enough evidence for this case to go to trial. prosecutors say the suspect shot up a sold out movie theater in july. after today's big delay, many victims' family members said they are tired of waiting for justice. alicia acuna with the news again at the courthouse in centennial, colorado this afternoon. this is a difficult week ending in more bad news for these families, alyssia. >> that's right, shep. with this decision many said they were not happy but they also were not surprised. >> he wanted to know what he was going to say and then you can start thinking what's further to come. but now my mind is set on pause. >> i respect it because i don't want to have to come back on appeals or i don't want to have to come back on

error that the defense wasn't ready. >> the district attorney's office started contacting victims and their family members last night when the bound over for trial. under the bill of rights, the prosecution can get their holmes arraignment today or not. the judge granted the defense request to arraign. have to wait for march. >> shepard: sounds like it's not going to be easier for many of them. >> next thursday the theater where many of their loved ones or were killed or brutally injured will open to the public. they have been invited to the movies. the company who owns the theater where the shooting took place sent out email inviting family members to a night of remembrance followed by a free movie. colorado governor john hickenlooper is scheduled to it attend the century 16 theater. aurora has been renovated in a

informal survey of residents the city wanted it this way. victim and family members say they were never asked their opinions and many rejected the invitation calling it disgusting. shep? >> shepard: alicia acuna in the snow tonight in centennial. that snow storm is barreling across the western u.s. in utah. heavy snow started falling last night and first alert forecasters say it will continue for tomorrow. highway patrol reports dozens of crashes near salt lake city as plows plow away 2 feet. part of the major interstate connecting the northern and part parts of the state. so cold around san diego that zoo keepers turned the heaters for the chimps. numbers show it's been a weird winter. so far parts of texas have gotten five times more snow than chicago. the windy city has now gone 321 days without at least an inch of snow. that breaks a 73-year-old record. in case you are wondering, of the high in chicago today 53.

weather weirdness from the fox weather center tonight. our chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. it's weird it is weird. >> chicago has broken every kind of non-snow record that you can have thirnt with rain down across parts of dixie. rain moving across much of new england. don't see much snow falling on the radar. going to change across parts of northern plains. that snow we saw in denver in alyssia's shot there. this going to begin to really strengthen. this is a snow outside of denver. they are going to get a couple of inches from this. but the storm is now beginning to gather its strength. that's going to happen across parts of nebraska. as it does, tonight into tomorrow we're going to be watching some blizzard conditions form especially across north dakota. a very strengthening storm. even places that maybe get 3 to 6 inches of snow. the wind is going to be going 40 or 50 miles per hour.
